Throwback Entry: January 24, 1994

I was recently going through some old boxes in my parent’s basement and found something interesting.  As a young boy I was a meticulous journaler.  I had an irrational fear of Alzheimer’s and thought that I had found a cheat code should that terrible diagnosis ever befall me.  I also thought that I knew how to survive a plane crash, but that’s a story for another time.  Anyway, I found the journals and am realizing I was a pretty good writer at such a very young age.  As a humble brag I think I’ll transcribe and post a throwback entry every now and then.  Enjoy!

I’m confused but it was a good day!

Dear Journal,

Happy Monday! Today was an up and down day.  It was partially cloudy out with a high of around 47 degrees.  It’s a bit warmer than usual but it didn’t even come close to the record temperature of 68 degrees.

Plain old cheerios for breakfast AGAIN.  I covered them in sugar when mom went to get my brothers dressed.  I don’t understand why she just doesn’t buy us Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Fruity Pebbles like we ask for.  I did get an orange Dino as my Flintstones vitamin though so things were looking up.

The morning however ended on a somber note when news reached us that Michalis Vranopoulos, the head of Greece’s largest state-owned bank, was murdered in Athens. Vranopoulos had been testifying in a judicial investigation into his bank’s sale of a majority stake in a cement company in 1992, so I think we all know what happened here.  Sometimes this world we live in doesn’t make that much sense, Journal.

My little brothers are such dweebs.  I hate having to walk to the school bus with them.  At least the radio did play the country’s #1 hit “All for Love” by Bryan Adams on the ride so I could tune the little dork-wads out.

School started out fine today.  We did our Monday spelling words again and had health class which was hilarious.  Our teacher had a baby last year so after class I raised my hand and asked her where babies come from.  Everyone laughed because of its sex. Hehe

Lunch conversation was a downer again today because we are all very concerned about the escalation of violence in Sarajevo.  Joe wanted to change the topic to Nancy Kerrigan but we all had too much on our minds.  I really hope that NATO will intervene soon.  Time will tell.

The rest of school was boring.  We all bundled up and played roller hockey when we got home.  Mark’s dad wasn’t home so we snuck into his parent’s room and looked at his Hustler Magazines.  It looks different than I would have guessed after health class. I don’t want to go up there with Mark again.

The Dow closed above 3,900 for the first time ever tonight! I’m glad this day finally turned around.  I can’t wait to turn 9 in a month!  I love you Journal.  Good Night!
